Chinese Mother Goose Rhymes

For centuries, Chinese children learned their first songs not from Western picture books but from verses whispered by grandparents, passed down through generations of mothers and nurses. This collection gathers over forty nursery rhymes, riddles, lullabies, and games that entertained families long before the modern era, songs that the New York Times once called 'an enchanting album' worthy of children everywhere. Here are vignettes of domestic life: a child chasing a rooster, a grandmother scolding a lazy grandson, animals talking in verse, quiet lullabies to ease little ones to sleep. The translations preserve the lilting music of the original Chinese while making these treasures accessible to English-speaking families. What emerges is not mere novelty but something deeper: a window into how Chinese culture has nurtured, taught, and delighted its children across dynasties. These are rhymes that conjured entire worlds for generations of little listeners, and they still carry that magic today. Perfect for families seeking to share the richness of world folklore with young children, or for anyone curious about how childhood sounds different across cultures.
