The oldest surviving English poem, Beowulf drops us into a world of mead-halls and monster-haunted marshes where glory is measured in the teeth of beasts you've slain. The Geatish warrior Beowulf arrives in Denmark to find King Hroðgar's great hall plagued by Grendel, a creature out of nightmare who devours warriors in their sleep. What follows is a trilogy of battles that traces the arc of a hero's life: the raw strength of youth against Grendel, the harder victory over his vengeance-seeking mother, and the mature valor of a king facing a dragon that threatens his people. But beneath the blood and treasure lies something stranger and sadder. This is a poem obsessed with what's lost to time, with the way fame fades and strong halls fall. It asks what remains when the warriors are dead and the gold is buried. Eight centuries before Shakespeare, an unknown poet created a work that still feels startlingly modern in its meditation on courage, mortality, and what we leave behind.
