Myths and Legends of Alaska

Long before Alaska bore its colonial name, the Tlingit, Inupiat, and other Indigenous peoples told stories that mapped the soul of the North. This collection gathers those myths, centering on Raven, the great trickster and creator who pulled the sun from a box, stole water from a stingy chief, and taught humans how to live alongside the land. The opening creation myth tells of the first man emerging from a beach pea pod, guided by Raven to summon animals, plants, and the first people into existence. These are not fairy tales removed from reality; they are knowledge systems, moral frameworks, and spiritual contracts between communities and the wild world around them. Whether you encounter Raven bringing light to a darkness-bound people or legends explaining why the salmon run or the aurora dances, you are reading the original literature of this place. It endures because these stories are not artifacts; they are living traditions that continue to shape how Alaska Natives understand their relationship to the land, the animals, and each other.
