Parodies of the Works of English & American Authors, Vol. V

What happens when the Romantics get laughed at by their contemporaries. This 1832 collection answers that question with gleeful precision. Walter Hamilton assembled parodies of the era's most sacred poetic texts: send-ups of Thomas Gray's mournful Elegy in a Country Churchyard, William Cowper's earnest meditations, and Wordsworth's wandering nature lyrics. These aren't mean-spirited takedowns; they're affectionate spoofs that prove familiarity breeds contempt and comedy. Each parody holds a mirror to the original, exaggerating the tics and tendencies that made these poems famous until the underlying craft becomes hilariously visible. The introduction provides crucial context, explaining why parody was considered a legitimate literary art form and acknowledging the challenge of mocking the famous without losing the thread. For anyone curious about how earlier generations read, revered, and mocked their literary giants.
