The Cavalier Songs and Ballads of England from 1642 to 1684

Picture a London tavern in 1646, Royalist soldiers drinking deep and raising their voices in song as their cause crumbles around them. These are not polished verses written for posterity but raw, urgent ballads born from a nation tearing itself apart: witty jabs at Parliament, mournful elegies for a executed king, defiant refrains sung before battles that would never be won. They were the pop songs of their era, composed when printing meant danger and silence meant surrender. Some crackle with dark humor, others ache with genuine loss. Together, they form an astonishing window into how common people made sense of war, loyalty, and grief through music. This anthology preserves voices from the losing side of history, the Cavaliers whose king lost his head, whose world was turned upside down, and who refused to let their songs die with their cause. Nearly four centuries later, these lyrics still pulse with something unmistakably human: the need to sing in the dark.
