Little Masterpieces of American Wit and Humor, Volume I

This anthology captures the raw, unpolished wit that defined American humor in its formative decades. Before stand-up, before sitcoms, before the modern comedy machine, these writers were inventing the rhythms of American laughter, dry, self-deprecating, and delightfully absurd. Here you'll find Mark Twain at his earliest and nastiest, Oliver Wendell Holmes skewering Boston pretension, Benjamin Franklin's sly aphorisms, and Washington Irving's gloriously pompous colonial governors. The book opens with Irving's portrait of Wouter Van Twiller, a Dutch colonial governor so indecisive he once stood for an hour trying to decide whether to shut his door. These are not refined jokes; they are snapshots of a young nation's sense of humor, rough-hewn and frequently rude. Some pieces feel very of their era. Others still land. Either way, this is a fascinating artifact for anyone curious about where American comedy came from.
