The Animal Story Book

This charming Victorian anthology gathers animal tales from around the world, each one breathing voice and feeling into the creatures within it. The collection opens with Tom, a clever bear living happily with an artist in Paris, whose adventures at a Carnival Masked Ball set the tone for what follows: mischief, warmth, and the quiet wonder of animals who think and feel much like we do. These are not simply moral fables dressed in fur and feather, but stories that treat their animal subjects as full characters with desires, fears, and tricks. The tales span the globe and the imagination, from clever foxes to loyal dogs, from creatures of the forest to the beasts of ancient story. What unites them is a fundamental tenderness toward the animal world and an understanding that children delight in animals precisely because they seem both familiar and mysteriously other. The collection aims to entertain first, but leaves young readers with a deeper appreciation for the living beings who share our world.
