Character Writings of the Seventeenth Century

Before psychology had a name, seventeenth-century writers were already dissecting human nature with surgical precision. This collection gathers character sketches: compact, satirical portraits that reduce entire types of people into a few devastating pages. Here you will meet The Flatterer, whose admiration always curves back toward himself; The Timist, who finds opportunity in every crisis; The Ruffler, who mistakes volume for authority. These writers understood something we still recognize: that while people resist being summed up, certain types recur across every generation with eerie consistency. The seventeenth century, obsessed with social order and moral classification, turned the character sketch into both entertainment and moral instrument, holding a mirror to readers' neighbors, colleagues, and perhaps themselves. The pleasure here is in recognition: the satisfaction of seeing a familiar human type nailed so perfectly that time falls away.
