The Grey Fairy Book

Andrew Lang's Grey Fairy Book gathers thirty-five tales from Lithuania to Africa, from Germany to Greece, proving that the fairy tale knows no borders. These are not the familiar Grimm stories you've heard before. Here are princesses who outwit ogres, talking animals who grant wishes, girls whose hair is made of silk, and fathers who are also monsters. The opening tale, "Donkey Skin," introduces a heroine forced to flee her own kingdom in a gown woven from moonlight and sky, setting the tone for what follows: strange, often cruel, always magical. Lang was a scholar of folklore, and his versions crackle with the raw power of oral tradition, the dark logic of old stories told to explain a world where frogs can become princes and kindness can save kingdoms. These aren't sanitized Disney versions. They're the wild, windswept originals. For readers who grew up on fairy tales and crave something that feels both ancient and startlingly fresh, this collection holds treasures. It's for anyone who believes the best stories are the ones that feel like they've always existed, waiting to be discovered.
