One Thousand Books for Children

A fascinating time capsule of early 20th century literary values, this 1911 compilation presents one thousand books deemed essential for shaping young minds. Organized by age group and curated by the National Congress of Mothers Literature Committee, it reflects what a generation of parents believed children should read: fairy tales that transport, adventure stories that build courage, and tales infused with moral instruction. The compiler argues for the delicate balance between entertaining young readers and fostering character through literature, cautioning against force-feeding complex material too early. What emerges is less a simple reading list than a window into Edwardian ideals of childhood, innocence, and the role of stories in raising virtuous citizens. For book historians, collectors of children's literature, and anyone curious about how literary tastes have shifted over a century, this serves as both practical bibliography and cultural artifact.
