Famous Composers and Their Works, Vol. 1

This 1891 volume offers an intimate portrait of the Netherlands school of composition, the musical powerhouse that dominated European music in the 16th century. The text centers on towering figures like Orlando di Lasso and Josquin des Prés, tracing their remarkable journeys from precocious musically-gifted children to influential chapel-masters whose innovations shaped the entire trajectory of Western music. Lasso's extraordinary story, he was kidnapped as a boy and raised in the courts before rising to become the most celebrated composer of his age, provides a vivid entry point into the world of Renaissance musical education and patronage. The book meticulously documents their technical innovations, their relationships with royal and ecclesiastical patrons, and the ways their compositions transformed sacred and secular music alike. For anyone seeking to understand the foundations of classical music tradition, this Victorian-era survey remains a fascinating window into how these masters were understood and celebrated by turn-of-the-century scholars.
