Buddhist Birth Stories; Or, Jataka Tales, Volume 1

These are the stories the Buddha told. Before he became the Enlightened One, he lived countless lives as kings and peasants, sages and animals, and in each life he planted the seeds of the wisdom that would one day blossom into Buddhism. The Jātaka tales, preserved for over two thousand years, are among the oldest continuous narrative traditions on Earth. Volume One gathers the earliest and most beloved of these birth stories: fables where the future Buddha appears as a generous hare, a clever monkey, a merchant who trades in truth. Animals speak. Karma shapes destiny. The moral emerges not from preaching but from the vivid unfolding of consequence. These tales predate Aesop, influenced the Panchatantra, and ripple through world literature still. They were told in ancient marketplaces and monastic halls, passed down through generations before anyone wrote them down. This edition restores them for modern readers who want to trace storytelling back to its roots.
