Library of the World's Best Literature, Ancient and Modern — Volume 07

This volume of the Library of the World's Best Literature offers a remarkable journey across centuries and civilizations. Readers will find themselves moving from the ancient Near East, Mesopotamian myths of creation, the flood, and the god Zu, through medieval letters between Abelard and Heloise, into the eighteenth century with Joseph Addison's charming Sir Roger de Coverley essays, and finally into the personal correspondence of American founding fathers and their wives. The compilation represents a Victorian ideal: a common foundation of reading meant to elevate and unite American households. What makes this particular volume singular is its breadth: the passionate medieval correspondence of Heloise stands beside Crawford H. Toy's translations of Akkadian hymns, while Sarah Flower's famous hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee" appears alongside political orations from John Quincy Adams. This is not merely a collection of great works but a document revealing what late nineteenth-century editors considered the essential building blocks of an educated mind. For readers interested in literary history, the formation of the Western canon, or Victorian-era cultural ideals, this volume serves as a fascinating time capsule.
