Hawaiian Folk Tales: A Collection of Native Legends

Before Hawaii became a tourist destination, it was a universe of gods, demigods, and spoken magic. These twenty-odd legends, collected from Hawaiian storytellers in an era when the old ways were fading fast, carry the voice of an island civilization in their bones. Here Maui, that trickster hero, lassoes the sun to lengthen the day for his mother. Here Pele, the volcanic goddess, wages war with her sister and claims the Big Island as her throne. Here creation itself unfolds through divine genealogy, the islands pulled from the sea by magic and will. The compiler, working in the early 1900s, understood that oral tradition dies when the last storyteller falls silent. These pages are what survives. They are not polished literature but something rarer: the raw grain of a culture talking to itself, in its own voice, before the world changed forever. For anyone who believes myths are just stories, these tales will quietly disagree.
