Henley's Twentieth Century Formulas, Recipes and Processes

A remarkable time capsule of practical knowledge from 1914, this encyclopedia of formulas spans everything a person might have needed to know a century ago. Here are recipes for silvering mirrors, brewing inks, tempering steel, preserving food, and making waterproof cements alongside instructions for photographers, tanners, metalworkers, and homemakers. The editor gathered these processes from technical journals and expert practitioners, refining them for real-world use. The result reads like a grandmother's recipe box crossed with a Victorian laboratory notebook, full of forgotten techniques that somehow feel both ancient and startlingly modern. For historians of everyday life, vintage crafters, or anyone curious about what people knew before Google, this book is a treasure. It captures a moment when knowing how to make your own solder or distill perfume was simply part of being a competent adult.
