Early Travels in Palestine: Comprising the Narratives of Arculf, Willibald, Bernard, Sæwulf, Sigurd, Benjamin of Tudela, Sir John Maundeville, De La Brocquière, and Maundrell

For over a thousand years, Western pilgrims have made the perilous journey to the Holy Land, driven by faith, curiosity, and an insatiable need to walk where scripture was written. This volume gathers the voices of nine of those travelers, from the 7th-century Bishop Arculf to the 17th century, men who risked death by starvation, pirates, and disease to see Jerusalem, the Jordan, and the sites of Christ's life with their own eyes. Their accounts are not polished travelogues but raw, often bewildered observations: a 12th-century knight confronts the gap between biblical prophecy and Ottoman reality; a Jewish merchant from Tudela documents a Jewish community thriving under Muslim rule; the legendary Sir John Maundeville spins tales of marvels that blur the line between genuine observation and fantasy. These are primary documents in the truest sense, revealing how medieval and Renaissance Europeans imagined the East, encountered the unfamiliar, and returned forever changed. To read them is to witness the birth of Western engagement with the Middle East, before the tourist and the colonist, when the journey itself was an act of profound personal stakes.
