As a Chinaman Saw US: Passages from His Letters to a Friend at Home

This is a rare, remarkable document: the observations of an educated Chinese man living in America during the early 1900s, writing letters to a friend back home. Over the course of a decade, he turns his keen, cultured eye on American life with a precision that is at times admiring, at times skeptical, and consistently wickedly funny. He tackles everything from immigration patterns to social customs, from the American sense of superiority to the strange contradictions woven into the nation's multicultural fabric. What makes these letters extraordinary is not just their historical value as one of the earliest non-Western perspectives on American society, but their wit and intelligence. This is no dry treatise. It is correspondence between friends, full of asides, inside jokes, and the particular pleasure of the outsider who sees what residents cannot. Reading these pages feels like overhearing a brilliant conversation across a century, a chance to discover how America looked to someone who stood outside its assumptions and found them both fascinating and absurd.
