Czech Folk Tales

These aren't your Disney-fied fairy tales. Czech folk tales carry centuries of weight in their telling - stories forged in Central Europe where magic bleeds into the mundane and the powerless sometimes, against all odds, outwit the cruel. Josef Baudiš gathered twenty-three of these gems, and what emerges is a world where stepmothers are genuinely wicked, where kindness to a beggar can save a kingdom, where the Twelve Months themselves will intervene for a girl brave enough to ask. The collection moves from Marusa, beaten and starved until the calendar takes pity, to stories of dragons and witches, clever peasants and foolish nobility. These aren't gentle lessons dressed in sugar - they're harder, stranger, funnier. The Czech tradition of humor, even in the face of hardship, runs through every tale. You'll recognize motifs echoing from Ireland to India, yet these stories remain distinctly Czech: their darkness, their resilience, their refusal to let the gentle remain crushed. For readers who grew up on Grimm and Andersen but want something wilder, more morally complex - this is the collection.
