Old Rail Fence Corners: The A. B. C's. of Minnesota History

These are the actual voices of people who built Minnesota, collected before their stories could be lost forever. In the early 1900s, Lucy Leavenworth Wilder Morris gathered reminiscences from pioneers who had arrived in the 1840s and stayed through the 1860s, farmers, traders, teachers, and families who remembered the territory when it was still wild. What survives is not polished history but something more valuable: unfiltered testimony about crossing the prairie, surviving brutal winters, trading with Dakota and Ojibwe communities, and building towns where there had been only grass and sky. The accounts are simple, direct, sometimes funny, often harrowing. They capture what official histories miss, the texture of everyday life on the edge of civilization, the small triumphs and large fears that defined a generation. This is social history assembled from fragments, ordinary people piecing together what it meant to make a home on land that was never empty.
