Lives of the Early Medici: As Told in Their Correspondence

Forget the statues and the palaces. Forget the political intrigue and the artistic patronage. In these letters, the Medici are simply a family: parents worrying about their children's marriages, merchants calculating profits, people missing loved ones far from home. This 1910 collection gathers correspondence from the generation that transformed a prosperous Florentine banking family into dynasts who would seat their daughters on the throne of France and their sons on the Chair of St. Peter. Here is Cosimo de' Medici in unguarded moments, Contessina reflecting on household matters, and the everyday machinery of a rising dynasty revealed through bills, birthday wishes, and desperate political notes. What makes this volume remarkable is its refusal to pedestal its subjects. These are not the machiavellian diplomats of standard histories but flawed, sometimes petty, often tender human beings trying to climb as high as they can while keeping their family intact. The letters strip away five centuries of mythology to show the actual texture of Renaissance family life, complete with financial anxieties, romantic disappointments, and the particular loneliness of power.
