Plans and Illustrations of Prisons and Reformatories

Published in 1922, this remarkable volume captures a pivotal moment in American correctional history when architects and reformers believed that the very walls of prisons could heal. Through meticulous floor plans, elevations, and detailed illustrations, the book presents a sweeping survey of American penal facilities then under construction or recently completed, including the ambitious new Sing Sing. But this is far more than an architectural catalogue. The anonymous author argues fiercely that prison design is not merely structural but fundamentally moral: that the presence of clinical facilities, spaces for psychiatric study, and modern sanitary systems represents a profound statement about what society believes its incarcerated citizens deserve. The plans reveal a system wrestling with its own conscience, attempting to reconcile punishment with the radical then-idea of rehabilitation. For historians of architecture, scholars of criminal justice, and anyone curious about how physical spaces both reflect and shape our collective values, this volume offers a window into an era when Americans dared to imagine prisons built for something other than mere containment.
