The Golden Treasury: Of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language

This is the anthology that shaped how generations of English speakers understand what a poem should be. Originally compiled in 1861 by Francis Turner Palgrave, The Golden Treasury gathered the finest lyric poems in the English language from the previous three centuries, establishing a standard of beauty and emotional precision that still defines the canon today. Palgrave's guiding principle was exacting: only poems by poets who had passed away, only works that achieved the rare marriage of music and meaning, only verses that could survive close reading and outlive their creators. The result moves from Spenser's Renaissance grandeur through Shakespeare's Sonnets and songs, through the Romantics' wildness, through Tennyson's Victorian elegance. Later editions extended this tradition into the twentieth century, adding poets from Yeats to Eliot to Larkin, proving the lyrical impulse remains vital. For anyone who wants to understand what English poetry does at its best, this is where to begin.
