Thackerayana: Notes and Anecdotes

This is a charming, intimate portrait of one of literature's great satirists as a schoolboy. Gathered from margins, notebooks, and recollection, the sketches and anecdotes in Thackerayana reveal William Makepeace Thackeray's formative years at Charterhouse School with disarming wit and affection. We see the young Thackeray drawing caricatures of his masters in the margins of his schoolbooks, composing humorous verses, and already mastering the sharp observational eye that would later define Vanity Fair. The collection captures the peculiar alchemy of a literary mind in development: the playful mischief, the love of books, and the early rumblings of a talent that would reshape the Victorian novel. What makes this volume endure is not merely its biographical value but its tone. These are not reverent memorials. They are the informal, laughing records of a young man who refused to take anything too seriously, including himself. For readers who savor literary biography, Victorian culture, or the delightful chaos of young creative minds, Thackerayana offers an unfiltered glimpse into the workshop where a master was forged.
