Library of the World's Best Literature, Ancient and Modern — Volume 01

This is the opening volume of one of the most ambitious literary projects of the Victorian age. Compiled in the 1890s, it aims to gather the world's greatest writing, from ancient Babylonian epics to contemporary American orations, and present it to ordinary household readers. The selections are paired with interpretive essays by distinguished scholars, transforming what could be a dry reference work into something closer to a literary salon: a place where Abelard's passionate letters to Heloise sit beside Sennacherib's inscriptions, where Addison's witty essays share space with the Adams family correspondence. What makes this volume remarkable is not just its scope but its vision: it represents a faith in literature as essential household furniture, as vital to a cultured life as a piano or a drawing room. For modern readers, it's both a time capsule and a revelation, a window into what late-Victorian editors considered essential, and a source of rediscovered gems from literatures now largely forgotten.
