Legends of Texas

Before Texas became a state, it was a land of desperate men and buried secrets. This 1924 collection gathers the tales that settlers and natives whispered around campfires: lost mines yielding gold that never reached any treasury, ghostly priests warning away treasure hunters, lovers separated by revolution whose spirits still wander the Rio Grande. The editor, working from contributions across the state, documents the San Saba Mines and their legend of Spanish riches, alongside stories of phantom coaches, haunted springs, and romances tragedy made immortal. These aren't fairy tales dressed in cowboy hats. They're the actual legends that shaped how Texans understood their land, its violence, and its promise. For anyone who's ever driven across the vastness of West Texas and wondered what secrets the hills still hold, this collection preserves the stories that made that emptiness feel ancient and alive.
