Classics of Literature

Translated by Richard Francis, Sir Burton

A thousand and one nights of欲望, danger, and the most audacious act of survival in all of literature: a woman keeping herself alive through the art of storytelling. When King Shahryar discovers his wife's betrayal, he swears to marry a new virgin each dawn and execute each one by nightfall, until Shahrazad volunteers to be his next bride. She begins a tale that does not end at sunrise, leaving the king hungry for the conclusion. Night after night, she spins stories within stories, weaving narratives of sorcerers and slaves, merchants and caliphs, jinns and enchanted princes, each tale more intoxicating than the last. This is not the bowdlerized children's version: it is Sir Richard F. Burton's monumental, unexpurgated translation, annotated with scholarly rigor and prefaced by Burton's own journey through the Orient's literatures. Volume One contains the frame tale of Shahrazad and Shahryar, the origin of the Scheherazade legend itself, plus early jewels including tales of the Hunchback and the vizier's daughters. The stories are set in a medieval Islamic world of lavish detail, palace intrigues, marketplace comedies, philosophical parables, yet rooted in the grit of everyday life. What unfolds is a labyrinth of voices: funny, cruel, erotic, wise, sometimes monstrous, always spellbinding. This is one of literature's oldest and most influential works, the ancestor of every frame narrative from The Canterbury Tales to Ulysses. It is a portal to another world and a mirror to our own mortality: in the end, we are all King Shahryar, desperate to hear what happens next.
