The Mayflower Compact

In November 1620, forty-one men aboard a battered ship off the coast of Massachusetts faced a crisis. They had no charter, no government, and no idea if they would survive the winter. Instead of descending into chaos, they did something unprecedented: they wrote a covenant. The Mayflower Compact is barely six hundred words long, but it established something radical in the English-speaking world - a government born not from royal decree but from the consent of the governed. These Pilgrims, fleeing religious persecution, found themselves inventing democracy in real time, binding themselves to laws they would collectively create and equally obey. The document opens with a declaration in the name of God and ends with forty-one trembling signatures. In between, it asks the fundamental question that would echo through American history: how do free people govern themselves? This is that answer, preserved in its original spelling and raw simplicity. Read it not as dusty history but as the moment a people chose to rule and be ruled by mutual promise.
