Makers of British Botany; A Collection of Biographies by Living Botanists

This 1913 collection emerged from a series of lectures at the University of London, gathering biographical essays by contemporary botanists on the architects of British botanical science. The profiles honor figures like Robert Morison and John Ray, whose pioneering work in systematic plant classification laid the intellectual foundations for modern botany. These are not mere biographical sketches but considered appreciations from practitioners who understood intimately what their predecessors achieved: the construction of a scientific framework that transformed plant study from amateur cataloguing into rigorous systematic inquiry. The volume captures a particular moment when British botany stood at the height of its influence, looking back at its own origins with scholarly admiration. For readers interested in the history of science, Victorian intellectual culture, or the evolution of botanical knowledge, this collection offers both biographical fascination and insight into how disciplines build themselves across generations.
