Popular Tales from the Norse

Unknown

1859

Translated by George Webbe, Sir Dasent

Long before Marvel gave us polished Norse gods, these are the stories that northern Europeans told each other in a world that felt older and more dangerous. Drawn from the oral traditions collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, this 1859 translation preserves forty-two tales that thrum with raw magic, dark humor, and sudden violence. Here you'll find princesses transformed into animals, trolls with terrible appetites, and clever peasant children who outwit giants through wit rather than strength. The tone is unlike Greek mythology's noble detachment: these are earthy,Sometimes funny, often cruel, and always compelling stories about ordinary people navigating a world where the supernatural intrudes without warning. «Tatterhood» rides a goat through the sky to confront a troll in her own hall. «The Three Dogs» sends a young man against a serpent that's been devouring a town's daughters. One tale even inspired Washington Irving's «Rip van Winkle.» These are folktales in their purest form, uncorseted for children, carrying the fears and fantasies of a pre-modern people who told these stories to explain their world and entertain themselves through long northern winters.
