The Junior Classics, Volume 9: Stories of To-Day

Part of the landmark Junior Classics series published in 1912, this ninth volume gathers stories reflecting early 20th-century American life and values. Here are tales of adventure, family loyalty, moral courage, and the quiet heroism of everyday sacrifice. The collection offers a mix of humor and poignancy, from playful folklore exchanges to thoughtful explorations of childhood innocence and generational bonds. Uncle Remus stories anchor the volume, presenting Black folk traditions through conversations between elderly storyteller and curious child. The anthology reflects a vanished era of children's literature, when educators believed good stories could simultaneously entertain and instill virtue. For modern readers, it serves as a fascinating time capsule revealing how earlier generations approached childhood reading, ethics, and imagination. Young readers seeking vintage adventure tales and adults curious about the evolution of children's literature will find this volume a window into a different world of storytelling.
