The World's Greatest Books — Volume 01 — Fiction

This 1861 volume inaugurates an ambitious project: gathering the finest fiction from across the ages into a single, accessible collection. The anthology opens with Edmond About's "The King of the Mountains," a sparkling adventure that follows botanical collector Hermann Schultz into the wilds of Greece, where he encounters Hadgi Stavros, a brigand chief who has somehow transformed post-war chaos into a comfortable, legitimized lifestyle. What begins as satirical observation of Greek brigandage becomes something richer: a meditation on law, ambition, and the blurry boundaries between civilization and outlawry. The volume that follows collects works by masters including Jane Austen and Honoré de Balzac, presenting them in faithful translations that preserve their original power. Here is literature meant to be read, not merely revered. Here are stories that cracked open old forms and invented new ways of telling truth. For the reader seeking a gateway into the permanent classics, or the collector who values how Victorians understood their literary inheritance, this remains a curious and satisfying artifact.
