The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night — Volume 05 (of 10)
1885
Translated by Richard Francis, Sir Burton
This volume opens with a king and his three sages, but make no mistake: this is no simple fairy tale. Behind the magic of flying horses and enchanted objects lies something far darker. The frame story that holds everything together is one of the greatest in all of literature: a queen saves her own life night after night by telling stories to a murderous king, each tale cutting off at dawn so she might live to finish it the next evening. It's a meditation on narrative itself, on how stories can bend power without breaking. The embedded tales range from Aladdin's legendary adventure to the tragic-comic plight of a hunchback whose body gets passed around a city like a drunk asleep on a park bench. Burton's footnotes, extensive and occasionally bizarre, add another layer: part Victorian scholarship, part orientalist adventure, all exhaustively annotated. These are stories that have been told and retold for centuries, translated across languages and cultures, and somehow they still feel alive, still dangerous, still strange.
