The Nursery Rhyme Book

Here is a book that contains the actual words your great-great-grandmother may have whispered to her children at bedtime. Compiled in 1897, this collection gathers over five hundred nursery rhymes, songs, nonsense jingles, and lullabies that have been handed down through generations like family heirlooms. From "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep" to "Jack and Jill," from "Yankee Doodle" to "A Frog He Would A-Wooing Go," these are the verses that shaped childhood for centuries before television, before radio, before recorded sound existed at all. Nearly one hundred illustrations accompany the rhymes, including reproductions from early ballad sheets and music books, tracing how children's book art has evolved over two centuries. But this is more than nostalgia. The notes that introduce each rhyme trace their earliest known publications, reveal how wording changed over time, and explore parallels in other languages. Who was Mother Goose? Did "Ring Around the Rosie" encode the plague? The editors wrestle with these questions, grounding each verse in history while celebrating its capacity for pure play. This is a book to read aloud in a dim room with a small listener on your lap, or to savor alone as a peculiar and delightful artifact of how humans have sung to their children across centuries.
