A Century of English Essays: An Anthology Ranging from Caxton to R. L. Stevenson & the Writers of Our Own Time
A Century of English Essays: An Anthology Ranging from Caxton to R. L. Stevenson & the Writers of Our Own Time
For four hundred years, English writers have used the essay to think out loud on paper. This anthology gathers the finest voices in that tradition: Addison's elegant social observations, Lamb's wistful nostalgia, Hazlitt's passionate criticisms, Stevenson's meditative wanderings. Here is a form born in the close study of Montaigne, sharpened by Bacon's aphorisms, and refined by generations into something distinctly English - conversational, personal, endlessly curious about the world and its oddities. These essays range across country lanes and city streets, through political turmoil and quiet afternoons, over dinner tables and in armchairs by firelight. They capture the art of saying something substantial about nothing in particular, and in doing so, revealing everything. Whether you come for the nostalgia or the criticism, the travel writing or the social comedy, you will find writers who believed that thinking carefully about ordinary life was worth doing beautifully.
