A Satire Anthology

Satire is civilization's most pleasurable weapon - it wounds because it tells the truth, and the fools it skewers never see it coming. This 1905 anthology, introduced by H.G. Wells, gathers the sharpest wits from Horace and Juvenal through the early twentieth century in a glorious celebration of literary insolence. Wells argues that while satire's targets change with the ages - from Roman emperors to Victorian prudery - its essential function remains constant: to hold a mirror to human folly and make us laugh uncomfortably at what we see. The poems that follow deliver exactly that, tracing satire's evolution from classical invective to modern irony, each piece a small act of literary revenge against pomposity, hypocrisy, and the endless human capacity for self-deception. This is satire not as mere joke-making but as a serious art form, one that demands equal measures of wit, courage, and precision from those daring enough to practice it.
