Famous Composers and Their Works, Vol. 3

This volume opens with the remarkable story of Joseph Joachim Raff, whose journey from self-taught amateur to celebrated composer reads like a 19th-century fairy tale. Without formal training or financial security, Raff pursued composition with stubborn devotion, eventually winning the support of giants like Mendelssohn and Liszt. The biographical sketches that follow trace the artistic pilgrimages of composers whose legacies still shape how we understand classical music. Written in an era when music criticism carried the weight of cultural mission, these pages offer more than chronology. They capture a moment when composers were still living memory, when their works were fresh controversies, when the canon itself was being argued into existence. For readers curious about where classical music came from, and why certain pieces matter, this collection provides context no modern biography can replicate: the perspective of those who heard this music when it was still new.
