Curiosities of Street Literature

Before tabloids, there were broadsheets: single sheets of paper hawked on Victorian streets, screaming with murder, execution, and scandal. This 1871 collection preserves the originals: blood-soaked ballads about the Burke and Hare body-snatchers, the chilling confessions of child-killer Constance Kent, the Red Barn Murder that shocked a nation. These were not quaint relics but the pulse of working-class London, the entertainment that kept pace with the gallows and the courthouse. James Catnach and his competitors knew exactly what sold: gore, betrayal, and the delicious thrill of someone else's tragedy, rendered in verse and sold for a penny. What makes this volume remarkable is not just its content but its framing: Hindley understood he was documenting a dying art form, already threatened by cheaper printing and the rise of the penny newspaper. Reading these pages feels like finding the raw, unfiltered DNA of every true crime podcast and sensational headline that followed. It is a window into a world where the line between news and entertainment had not yet been drawn, and the public's appetite for the macabre was fed in the most direct terms possible.
