Modern British Poetry

A window onto a literary revolution. This 1898 anthology captures British poetry at the precise moment it broke from Victorian convention and stumbled toward modernism. Thomas Hardy appears here, his verse heavy with elegiac ache and the grinding passage of time. W.B. Yeats contributes his early Celtic poems, myth and melody intertwined, already reaching toward something ancient and urgent. Between these pillars stand the Aesthetic poets, their work shimmering with the doctrine of art for art's sake, their lines as decorative and dangerous as Oscar Wilde's prose. The collection illuminates a culture in crisis: an empire questioning its certainties, an artistic establishment discarding old forms and fumbling toward new ones. What emerges is not a coherent movement but a ferment, a generation of poets each searching for the language to express a world that had suddenly become strange. For anyone curious where modern poetry began its long, bewildering journey, this volume marks the starting line.
