Ancient Poems, Ballads, and Songs of the Peasantry of England

These are the songs England forgot it knew. Collected from mouths and memories before they vanished forever, these ballads and poems preserve the raw voice of rural common folk who rarely left any mark on the written record. Here are songs about lovers who die for each other, about men who work until their backs break, about death coming for the rich and poor alike with no respect for rank. Here are the tunes sung in taverns and cottages, at harvest festivals and gravesides, passed down through generations until a 19th-century compiler finally caught them on the page. The language is plain but devastating: no aristocratic flourish, no poet's polish, just the direct and often brutal wisdom of people who knew hardship as a daily companion. These pieces chronicle a world that was already vanishing when they were gathered, making them both a literary artifact and an act of rescue. For anyone who wants to hear voices that history usually silences, this collection offers something rare and startlingly alive.
