Zumalacárregui

In the mountains of Navarre, a general reshapes the nature of war. Benito Pérez Galdós brings the legendary Carlist commander Zumalacárregui to vivid life in this gripping installment of the Episodios Nacionales, tracking his lightning campaign through the Basque provinces as he transforms a ragged rebellion into a feared military force. But the novel is no mere battle chronicle. Through the tormented chaplain José Fago, Galdós excavates the moral wreckage of civil war: faith tested by violence, loyalty fractured by impossible choices. The execution of the captured mayor Don Adrián Ulibarri, reflecting on love and betrayal as he faces the firing squad, captures the human cost that history books rarely record. Written in Galdós's final decade but set amid the 1830s Carlist uprisings, this is historical fiction at its most urgent: a meditation on how ordinary people become heroes, villains, or simply casualties when history ignites. For readers who crave fiction that thinks big about nation, war, and the fragile boundary between principle and atrocity.
