Lex is a reading app and reading tracker. You can read over 6 million books directly in Lex, or use Lex to log and track books you read anywhere else — paperback, Kindle, Audible, Spotify, library copy. Everything lives in one place: your shelves, reading history, ratings, goals, streaks, and notes.
Yes. Lex is built for that. Add any book from the 6M+ catalogue to a shelf, log reading sessions with the medium you're using (Paperback, Hardcover, Kindle, Kobo, Audible, Spotify, etc.), rate and review, and mark it finished. You don't need to upload the book or read it in Lex.
Tap the search icon in the navigation bar to search by title, author, or genre. You can also browse by genre, explore curated shelves, or check out collections like Empire Builders and Classics Cafe. Lex has over 6 million books and 30,000+ audiobooks.
Tap any book in the catalogue to open its detail page, then tap "Read" to start. Your progress, highlights, and bookmarks sync across all your devices — phone, tablet, desktop, and web.
Yes. When you're signed in, reading position, highlights, bookmarks, notes, bookshelves, logged sessions, ratings, reviews, and streaks all sync automatically across iOS, Android, desktop app, and web.
Go to Settings and choose from four themes: Midnight (dark, default), Daylight (light), Parchment (warm sepia), and Dusk (soft grey). The theme applies everywhere — the app, the reader, and your bookshelves.
The Premium Catalogue is a growing collection of exclusive Lex editions — new English translations of classic works, beautifully typeset and proofread. These are books you won't find anywhere else, published by Lex and included free with your Premium subscription. Browse the catalogue at lex-books.com/premium-catalogue.
The catalogue focuses on works that deserve better English editions — classic texts where existing translations are outdated, clunky, or hard to find. Each Lex edition is a fresh translation with modern English, clean formatting, and full AI intelligence (X-Ray, chapter summaries, character maps). New titles are added regularly.
Yes. Lex's free library has over 6 million public domain books from sources like Project Gutenberg and the Internet Archive. Premium Catalogue books are original Lex publications — new translations and editions that we produce in-house. They're exclusive to Premium subscribers.
Tap the "+" button on your homepage and select "New bookshelf" to create one. You can also create a shelf on the fly when adding a book — tap the three-dot menu on any book, choose "Add to bookshelf," and tap "Create new bookshelf." Lex automatically creates three status shelves for you: Currently Reading, Want to Read, and Read. You can pin up to 3 shelves to the top of your library for quick access.
Create a bookshelf (your reading list), then add books to it from any book's detail page using the three-dot menu or the "Add to bookshelf" button. You can reorder books by dragging and dropping, or use the sort dropdown to sort by date added, title, or author. You can also ask Lex AI to research and create a reading list for you on any topic.
Yes. Open the bookshelf, tap the menu, and toggle it to public. You'll get a shareable link that anyone can open to see your shelf and the books on it. Other Lex users can save your public shelf to their own library.
Go to Settings and scroll to "Import your library." Lex supports imports from Goodreads (profile link or CSV export), Kindle (Amazon data export), Apple Books, Calibre (reads your metadata.db directly), and CSV files from StoryGraph, Literal, or LibraryThing. Your imported books are matched to Lex editions, organized into shelves automatically, and — where available — ratings and dates read come across too.
Tap the heart icon on any book's detail page. All your liked books are collected in a special "Liked Books" shelf accessible from your library's quick access grid.
No. Lex has 6M+ books already catalogued. Find the book, add it to a shelf, log sessions and ratings. Uploading is only needed if you want to read the actual text inside Lex.
Tap the "+" button on the homepage and choose "Log reading." Pick the book, the medium you used (Paperback, Hardcover, Kindle, Kobo, Audible, Spotify, etc.), and how long you read. You can log a quick session, a completed book, or use the reading timer to track a live session.
Start a timer for the book and medium you're reading — the timer keeps running in the background even when you leave the app. Pause, resume, or stop whenever you want. When you stop, Lex saves the session to your reading log and updates your progress.
From any book's detail page, tap the status selector and choose "Read." You can also finish a book at the end of a logged session — Lex will prompt you to mark it complete, rate it, and add a review.
Yes. Add the book to your "Read" shelf, and optionally add the date you finished, your rating, and a review. If you import from Goodreads, Kindle, or StoryGraph, your past reading history comes with it.
Your profile shows your reading timeline, books finished, current and longest streak, time read, and ratings. You can filter by year, genre, or medium.
Set a yearly books goal from Settings or your profile. Progress updates automatically as you mark books finished, and you can see how far ahead or behind schedule you are.
A streak counts consecutive days you've read — whether that's reading in Lex, logging a session, or running the reading timer. Your current and longest streak show on your profile and homepage.
You earn streak freeze tokens you can spend to protect a streak after a missed day. Tap the freeze button on your streak card to apply one. If you're out of tokens, the streak resets — but your longest streak is always kept.
Tap the stars on a book's detail page, or rate it at the end of a logged session. Ratings show on your profile and factor into Lex's personalized recommendations.
Yes. From a book's detail page, tap "Write a review." Reviews are public by default and show on your profile and the book's page. You can edit or delete them at any time.
Yes. Open any profile and tap Follow. Your homepage feed shows books your friends have finished, rated, reviewed, or added to public shelves.
Clubs are groups where you read together with other members. Create one around a monthly pick, a genre deep-dive, a buddy read, an author study, or your own format. Clubs can be public, request-to-join, or invite-only. Find and create clubs at lex-books.com/clubs.
Go to Settings > Privacy. Each category — Highlights, Notes, Bookmarks, Shelves, Reading History, and Book Uploads — can be set to Public, Friends, or Private independently. Individual bookshelves also have their own public/private toggle.
EPUB and PDF upload directly. MOBI, AZW3, and CBZ files are converted to EPUB automatically on upload. DRM-protected files (e.g. most Kindle store purchases) cannot be read — you'll need the DRM-free originals.
Yes. Tap the "+" button on the homepage and select "Upload book," or drag and drop files on the web. Lex looks up metadata (title, author, cover) automatically. Your uploads sync across all your signed-in devices.
Covers and inline images render natively in EPUBs — they scale cleanly across phone, tablet, and desktop. PDFs preserve the original layout, so illustrations, diagrams, and fixed-layout art come through exactly as designed. EPUB is generally the best format for books with mixed text and artwork.
Yes. Files you upload are stored in your personal library and visible only to you. They sync across your signed-in devices via Lex's cloud storage, but they aren't shared publicly and other users can't read them. If you'd rather not upload a file, you can still track reading activity and mark books complete that you read elsewhere.
Yes. When you upload a PDF, Lex can convert it into a reflowable EPUB so it reads like a real ebook with adjustable fonts and layout. You can choose between fast, balanced, and high-quality conversion modes. Conversion progress is shown in real time.
Yes. If you hold the rights to a book — your own novel, a translation, a public-domain edition — you can publish it on Lex and sell it to readers. Authors keep 90% of every sale, with no exclusivity or lockups. See lex-books.com/authors for details.
While reading, tap the gear icon in the top bar to open the settings panel. You can choose from 7 fonts (including Merriweather, Atkinson Hyperlegible, and Source Code Pro), 6 text sizes from XS to 2XL, three line spacing options (Compact, Normal, Loose), and left or justified alignment.
Lex offers five reading modes. Scroll: continuous scrolling (default on mobile). Pages: paginated reading (default on desktop). Blitz (Premium): speed reading at up to 750 words per minute, word-by-word or sentence-by-sentence. Bilingual (Premium): side-by-side translated text. Listen: synced audiobook playback with highlighted text. Switch modes from the gear icon in the reader.
Select any text while reading to see the highlight menu. Choose from five colors (yellow, red, purple, blue, green) and four styles (highlight, underline, strikethrough, box). Tap an existing highlight to add a note, change its color, or delete it. View all your highlights and notes in the reader sidebar under the Highlights tab, where you can filter by color, style, or tag.
Tap the bookmark icon in the reader toolbar to bookmark your current position. View all bookmarks in the reader sidebar under the Bookmarks tab — each shows the chapter name, your percentage through the book, and the date. Tap any bookmark to jump to that position.
Select a word and tap the dictionary icon (Aa) in the selection menu. You can also use Web Search from the same menu to look up the selected text online.
Yes. Select the text you want to share, then tap Share in the selection menu. Lex generates a styled quote card with several template options. You can share it directly to social media, messaging apps, or save the image.
If a book has an audiobook available, you'll see a "Listen" button on its detail page. Tap it to open the audio player with chapter navigation, playback speed control, and a seek bar. On mobile, playback continues in the background with lock screen controls.
Yes. Switch to Listen mode from the gear icon in the reader. The text scrolls automatically and highlights each word as it's spoken. You get a mini player at the bottom with play/pause and speed controls while following along in the book.
Lex AI is your personal reading companion. It can answer questions about the book you're reading, recommend new books based on your taste, research reading lists on any topic, and generate study materials. Access it from the sparkles icon in the header (for general questions and recommendations) or the AI icon in the reader toolbar (for questions about the book you're reading).
In the reader, Lex AI can answer questions about the book using the actual text — it cites specific passages you can tap to jump to in the book. It can also generate flashcards, quizzes, vocabulary lists, character maps, timelines, discussion questions, chapter summaries, and key quotes for any book.
Yes. Lex AI learns your reading taste from your library and reading history. Ask it for personalized recommendations, or get specific — "What books did Napoleon read?", "Books that influenced The Lord of the Rings", or "Build me a reading list on stoic philosophy." It researches across the web and matches results to Lex's catalog.
Yes. Ask Lex AI to create a shelf on any topic ("Create a shelf of the best books on medieval history"), build a structured reading plan, or research what books a historical figure read. It creates the shelf, populates it with books from the Lex catalog, and adds it to your library.
Yes. From any book's detail page, tap "Translate" and choose from 23 languages including Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, and more. Lex creates a new translated edition that you can read just like any other book. Translation progress is shown in real time.
Yes, on the iOS and Android apps. Tap the download icon on any book's detail page to save it for offline reading. Premium subscribers get up to 50 GB of offline storage. View and manage your downloads from the Downloads page in your library.
X-Ray gives you AI-generated intelligence about a book — chapter-by-chapter summaries, a character map with roles and descriptions, and a deep analysis of themes with supporting evidence. You'll find X-Ray on the book's detail page under the intelligence tabs. Editions and Quotes tabs are free; Chapters, Characters, Themes, Illustrations, and Lessons require Premium.
Lex Premium gives you access to the Premium Catalogue (exclusive Lex editions and new translations), AI audiobook generation (turn any book into an audiobook with premium AI voices — 1 free generation per month), Lex AI (your reading companion), Blitz mode (speed reading), Bilingual mode (side-by-side translations), book translation into 23 languages, PDF to EPUB conversion, offline downloads, X-Ray intelligence, higher upload limits (50 GB), and a verified profile badge.
