Tormento

Published in 1884, 'Tormento' by Benito Pérez Galdós follows the life of Amparo, a simple and hardworking young woman who works as a servant for Francisco de Bringas and his wife, Rosalía Pipaón. The arrival of Agustín Caballero, a wealthy relative from the Indies, complicates matters as he becomes interested in Amparo, much to Rosalía's dismay.
