Mendizábal
''Mendizábal'' is a historical novel by Benito Pérez Galdós, published in 1898 as part of his ''Episodios Nacionales'' series. Set during the early 19th century, it follows Fernando Calpena, a young man who arrives in Madrid amidst political turmoil following the death of King Fernando VII. The narrative explores the complexities of Spain's political landscape, including the rise of Isabel II and the conflicts between liberals and absolutists, while intertwining fictional characters with historical events. Galdós's work is notable for its rich political commentary and its depiction of societal life during a pivotal era in Spanish history.
