Bailén
1873
''Bailén'' is a historical novel by Benito Pérez Galdós, first published in 1873, set during the Napoleonic Wars. The story follows Gabriel de Araceli, who, after recovering from injuries, participates in the pivotal Battle of Bailén, where Spanish forces defeat the French army. Through various characters, including the patriotic Don Santiago and the cynical D. Luis de Santorcaz, Galdós explores themes of patriotism, societal upheaval, and the complexities of Spanish identity during the French invasion. This work is part of Galdós's ''Episodios Nacionales,'' which chronicles the tumultuous life of 19th-century Spain.
