The Post Office

Rabindranath Tagore

Performance-oriented version of The Post Office by Rabindranth Tagore, translated to English by Devabrata Mukherjee, published 1914. The text was semi-automatically translated from an HTML web page ( archived copy ) by David Fifield. For the sake of performance, a few adjustments were made; mainly, enforcing consistency in character names. For example, the original calls Sudha "GIRL" before she reveals her name; and the herald is just "VOICE" until he comes inside. This version uses the same name for the same role throughout (except that the Gaffer's lines are labeled "FAKIR" when he is in character as the Fakir). The HTML web page appears to be derived from a book first published in 1914 by The Macmillan Company, translated by Devabrata Mukherjee. The title page of this version says 1912 because that's when the English Wikipedia says the play was first written. (Although the Bengali Wikipedia says 1911.) There are several copies of this book and later printings on the archive: thepostoffice06523gut (1914, Project Gutenberg text) postoffice00tagouoft (1914) bub_gb_9z2VMsy2f9sC (1914, with introduction by W.B. Yeats) postoffice00tago (1916) postoffice00tagoiala (1916, Bolpur Edition) postofficetransl00tagouoft (1917) The included LaTeX source file requires the sides class.
