In the summer of 1895, a draper's assistant named James Hooper inherits an ancient bicycle and embarks on a two-week tour through the English countryside - a journey that will shatter his small life wide open. With nothing but borrowed maps and a head full of dreams, he pedals past manor houses and hedgerows, encountering bicycling enthusiasts, wandering performers, and a mysterious young woman in a green veil who haunts his imagination. Wells, writing with the same inventive spirit that would later produce The Time Machine, crafts a bicycling idyll that is also a sharp, funny portrait of class, aspiration, and the intoxicating possibility of escape. The bicycle becomes a machine of transformation, and young Hooper discovers that the world is far larger and stranger than the shop counter where he measures ribbon for genteel ladies.
