The War of the Worlds
Before Independence Day, before Arrival, there was *The War of the Worlds*. H.G. Wells' seminal invasion narrative plunges us into a terrifyingly plausible scenario: an advanced Martian civilization, fleeing their dying planet, sets its sights on Earth. With terrifying heat-rays and towering, tripod war machines, they lay waste to Victorian England, encountering little resistance from humanity's primitive weaponry. The story unfolds through the eyes of an unnamed narrator, a philosopher caught in the chaos, as he witnesses the swift, brutal conquest and the utter devastation of society.
