Time Machine (Version 3)
In 1895, H.G. Wells invented time travel. But his scientist doesn't just hop forward for adventure, he travels to the year 802,701 and finds humanity split in two. The Eloi, beautiful and childlike, lounge in paradise above ground. The Morlocks, pale and prowling, tend machinery in the darkness below. At first it seems a utopia. Then the Time Traveller understands: the gentle Eloi are the descendants of the ruling class, softened by centuries of leisure, while the Morlocks are the workers, evolved into something monstrous in their underground toils. One species farms the other. This is not science fiction with ray guns and aliens. This is a Victorian moral panic about capitalism, class, and what happens when the people you exploit finally evolve teeth. Wells then pushes further, past the extinction of both species, to a dying Earth where the sun is red and bloated, and the last life is a faint, trembling pulse. It is the most unsettling hour in literature.
