Light Freights
1901
W.W. Jacobs understood something essential about human greed, gullibility, and the elaborate lengths people will go to avoid honest work. Light Freights collects his comic short stories, many featuring the unforgettable Sam Small, a working-class schemer whose brilliant plans somehow never pan out quite as intended. The book opens with firemen discussing money after being paid off, then hurtles into Sam's hare-brained scheme to pass off his nephew Beauty as a "wild man of Borneo" for quick cash. These are stories of small dreams and smaller morals, of men who believe fortune is just one clever trick away. Jacobs writes with sharp observational humor about the London docks and the sailors, laborers, and rogues who populate them. The comedy is gentle but pointed, poking fun at get-rich-quick mentality and the absurd confidence of ordinary men convinced they are far cleverer than they actually are. For readers who enjoy comedic short fiction in the tradition of Jerome K. Jerome or Damon Runyon.
