The sea keeps its secrets, and some men refuse to stay buried. A young cabin boy boards the brig Endeavour for his first voyage, expecting adventure. Instead, he finds terror. When the crewman Jem Dadd drowns and is committed to the deep, the boy expects the matter settled. But Dadd returns, waterlogged, silent, and insistently knocking at the door of the living. The crew is paralyzed by fear, certain they harbor a ghost. Yet something in the figure's desperate attempts to communicate suggests a more earthly tragedy: a man trying to convey the fate of those he left behind. Jacobs, better known for "The Monkey's Paw," crafts a maritime ghost story that trades obvious shocks for creeping dread. The sea becomes a character itself, cold, indifferent, and hostile to the living.
